Don’t Stereotype Me—University of Mary Washington Islamic Student Association campaign against stereotyping and judging on campus. This campaign was inspired by the Trayvon Martin case. Stereotyping essentially killed Trayvon Martin so we wanted to raise awareness about the negative effects of stereotyping. [via]
The Atlantic | Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush took the symbol of the Trayvon Martin protests from the street to the Capitol on Wednesday, getting ejected from the House floor for wearing a hoodie. Read more at The Atlantic Wire.
Hey beautifuls. So Jamnesty went really well! The bands were great, and we made over 500 dollars in donations!! This money will go into helping fund tuition for a group of children in Uganda. I know I’ve linked this a bunch of times, but check out http://peacetogether.org to learn more about the great organization that we donated to.
We’re now working on a new campaign to increase awareness of international criminals. I’m sure a lot of you have heard of the Kony Campaign. Though Amnesty has stated that they do not hold a position on whether they agree with the campaign or not, they see it as an opportunity to increase “public awareness due to the campaign to draw attention to specific actions that can help stop human rights abuses in the regime.”
We’ve decided to use the awareness of the Kony Campaign to have an open discussion on campus about international war criminals. During our last meeting, we split into groups and researched human right abusers Bashar Al-Assad (Syria), Omar Al-Bashir (Sudan), Ratko Mladic (former Yugoslavia), Warren Anderson (USA) and Efrain Rios Mont (Guatemala). We’re going to put our research together into pamphlets which we will pass out to people on the quad in addition to our panel discussion. Woot, I’m excited!
Love,
Ashley
Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.
